Sydney: Fish market

Eventually we got into our hotel and took possibly the best showers in recent memory. Cleaned up, we made our way to the Sydney Fish Market for exploration and some lunch.

On the way:

Apparently this is a brand of notepaper. But really, doesn't all paper have poo potential?  Yeah. Dunno. (Dumbo?)

This here also shows you can be lost in translation in a country that speaks your language:

If we were on the Amazing Race, Justin would totally have to be the navigator. I don't think I could read a map if my life depended on it. But Justin has the worst restaurant karma ever. So he could get us to a place, though the food might kill us. Together, we're a functioning individual.

Soon, we arrived at the Fish Market. Supposedly it's the largest one outside of Tokyo. One of my favorite memories of Tokyo is getting to the fish market at an ungodly early hour and having the freshest sushi ever for breakfast. This wasn't quite that, and the only way you can see ALL of the Sydney Fish Market is if you take a tour, which didn't work for us, but still, it's a pretty big joint with some excellent food tourism. Weird fish, mussels as big as your hand, and crabs as big as your house (huh huh Beavis, I wrote crabs).

Rock, rock...

Interesting that the eastern rock lobster is more red than the western. Perhaps it's more stressed. Also, the eastern version is much pricier!

These mussels were really cool in person--a real iridescent green. Like they were lit with a green light.

A guy at our hotel told us about these. That they were really good and we should try to get them. But I didn't see them on any menus and when we had kitchens in various places throughout our trip, I wasn't able to get any bugs. That sounded bad. Apparently they're like lobster tail. Considering a lobster looks like a giant cockroach to me, I totally get that.

These crabs were EASILY the size of a dinner plate, each. Amazing. We saw a family of six tucking into one for lunch.

Bright, fresh fish.

The scene.
